EW1 Woodland Mixture |

| This mixture is designed to tolerate a degree of shade. As with meadow mixtures
they are composed of 20% native wild flowers and 80% slow growing grasses (by weight), and the flower and grass
components of each mixture are available separately.
All wild flowers are of British native wild origin. We have also used native wild origin grass seed where possible.
EW1 contains a good range of shade tolerant, spring and early summer flowering wild flowers and grasses.
The flower component of this mixture, EW1(F), contains woodland species which are adapted to growing amongst established trees where shading has reduced light levels to below 50% of that in the open. In very deep shade (light levels below 25%) grasses will no longer grow, so only flowers are required. Under these conditions sow EW1(F) at 0.5 to 1.5g per square metre. EG9, the grass component of EW1 and EH1, contains grasses which tolerate moderate shading. These grasses provide initial ground cover and weed suppression in young plantations and more open woods. To a degree the grass component can act as a 'nurse' to the woodland flowers in a developing plantation. In new plantations, where shade will take 5 years or more to develop, it is better to sow the grasses initially (EG9 or an alternative grassland mix) and over-sow woodland flowers some years later as shading increases.
The typical composition of EW1 is as follows:
