EM8 Meadow Mixture for Wetlands

EM8 contains species able to tolerate a fluctuating water table and periods of being waterlogged.  Periodic flooding, either seasonally by the winter rains or deliberate as in traditional water meadows, creates grassland of a particular character and species composition.  Flood meadow soils spend part of the year waterlogged but drain and become drier for much of the growing season.  The water table usually remains in reach of deeper rooting plants throughout the year.

Most plants need to be well established to withstand winter flooding and seeding needs to take place either in the early autumn or spring.

Wetland habitats are characteristically quite variable in composition, reflecting local drainage and management.  Conditions can vary, for instance, between the highs and lows in ridge and furrow grassland.  Localized differences may require a targeted approach.  For example, boggy areas which remain waterlogged for much of the year may be best sown with pond edge mixture EP1.

As with meadow mixtures it is composed of 20% native wild flowers and 80% slow growing grasses (by weight), and the flower and grass components are available separately as EM8(F) for the flower component and EG8 for the grass component.

The typical composition of EM8 is as follows:
