EM6 Meadow Mixture for Chalk and Limestone Soils

The range of plants in meadow mixture EM6 includes species characteristic of lime rich soils from calcareous grassland communities of chalk and limestone soils (such as NVC CG2).  Sowing EM6 directly onto exposed chalk or limestone can produce some of the most interesting results.  Establishment will be slower than on better soils, but less management will be needed.

Management will, in part, determine whether a sowing develops a more downland or meadowland character.  True lime-loving species in this mixture will, however, only thrive on the thinnest soils with a high limestone or chalk content, where soil poverty moderates competition from more vigorous species.

Some experimental landscaping schemes have produced successful results using bulk imports of 'soil forming materials' with a high lime content such as rock chalk or crushed concrete.

Chalk grassland is famous for its diversity of species.  EM6 offers a good selection of these and can be extended by adding other species from our list.

As with meadow mixtures it is composed of 20% native wild flowers and 80% slow growing grasses (by weight), and the flower and grass components are available separately as EM6(F) for the flower component and EG6 for the grass component.

The typical composition of EM6 is as follows:
