WETLANDS |
||||
| Marginal communities beside ponds, ditches and streams form a distinctive and valuable
habitat. They are important for wildlife, both in and out of the water, and they protect the water, to a certain
extent, against run off of soil and pollutants from adjacent land.
A pond edge mixture may be used to sow a strip 1-2 metres wide around the edge of the water. Prepare a weed free seed bed in the normal way and sow up to the edge of the water. Quick establishment will reduce soil run off, so it is probably better to sow in the spring rather than the autumn or winter. Annual weed growth in the first year can be controlled by mowing or strimming, but once established leave the mixture uncut and allow it to grow tall throughout the year. The structure of the habitat will be valued by wildlife.
Marshy land, which may be permanently wet in areas and may have a high water table, and land which floods for long periods during the winter, can be sown with a wet meadow mixture such as EM8. This should be sown and managed in the same way as described earlier for meadows, with the best management being a summer hay cut and aftermath grazing.
